Being female tells me that I am given the right to be a feminist;

Not for you to tell me whether or not I have reached your expectation for being feminine.

-Ban Sasha

身为女性,是我争取女权的资格;

My blood was boiling towards those foolishness and uneducated. I was angry, but I regret not, for holding back my anger, regaining my peace, took some time to ponder, made some arrangements to my thoughts, lastly presenting as this article that I am currently writing.

The purpose of this write up is not to shame or offend anyone who somehow appear to be part of the characters of the story or being a reader of the text.

I just hope to create awareness, insights or message for the readers of my writings; also to let those who are able to relate gain encouragement and accountability, knowing that you are not alone; even if there is no one, at least I have allowed myself to release my emotions and anger in a healthy and effective way.

Feminism, it is not any new concept or movement. Since history, cases and scenarios about gender inequality has been appearing, and so lead such a title to arise –'Feminist'. The meaning and perspective towards feminism has been transforming ongoingly, however, the core of it remains –being female, should not be the reason for someone to be devalued.

It was an exciting Friday afternoon, although universities' clubs and societies could not gather physically due to the pandemic, my club organized a Christmas party via Zoom. The agenda was presented with much delight, there were fun ice-breaking games, sharing, chit-chatting, and costume showcasing! Speaking of costume showcasing, it was a fun activity where participants will appear at the Zoom Meeting according to the dress-code mentioned in the invitation, and the dress-code of the day was 'outfit that best describes yourself'. I was overjoyed and excited for the activity, but never did I expect that I would feel pissed during the moment.

The costume showcase activity required each participant to present and explain about how the interesting outfits that they had chosen represented their own unique and meaningful identity. It was my turn after a few had spoken, I was wearing a lovely pink dress and a pink hat, yeap... it was literally pink to the max, if you were wondering. Pink has been labeled as a colour that represents ‘female’, please do not get me wrong, the intention was never in attendance to demonstrate gender discrimination or any stereotyping, I too do have a lot of male friends that fancy towards the colour pink, I was just trying to mention a scenario that is somewhat general in my own cultural context. So, due to the scenario, I wore a set of pink to represent that I am a feminist, therefore when it was my turn to speak, I spoke confidently and without hesitant, "I am a feminist".

Never did I imagine, I would receive such "responses" from the crowd, I classified the responses into two categories: [1] Misunderstood, plus disagree [2] Misunderstood, but agreeing to what was being misunderstood to be what is right.

Category 1:

This is a situation where most of them misunderstood the meaning of the word 'Feminist', and mistaken it to be a synonym of 'Feminine'. Therefore, they responded in disagreements, questions, and even sarcasms in a joking manner. Those who know me surely acknowledge the great volume of my voice, hence due to the recognition, the majority will think that I am not someone that fits to be 'feminine'. I was triggered by the fact of the misunderstanding between 'being a feminist' and 'being feminine', more so "who are you to judge and label?" I whispered within my bones, and "how can you be in this level of unawareness, even to the extent you mistaken the meaning?" again I questioned with exclamation in my heart. However, with the intention of not wanting to ruined the atmosphere of the party, and convincing myself that it was just a "misunderstanding", I withheld my anger and replied politely "Ehem, what I meant was I am a feminist, not I am feminine, meaning at necessary moments speaking up for women's rights". "Phew... Dark clouds were cleared" I thought to myself, but I was wrong as the party continued.

Category 2:

The next girl was up to showcase her outfit after my speech. Sorry if this appears to be ill at ease for me to categorize just her into a specific category according to the story. Hopefully not, but perhaps they were some that thought the same as her but did not come to my notice. Although with similar headlines, the difference between category 2 and 1 would be this category did not just simply mistaken the surface definition of the word itself, however having a wrong perception towards the responsibility and characteristic of the title 'feminist', thinking that 'feminists should or naturally be feminine'.

The girl mentioned is a person with an extraordinary sense of fashion, jersey and flip flops would be her common go-to, her hair was coolly undercut, she seldom or never according to my knowledge wears dresses, makeup and so on. Although her fashion sense would be a complete different from mine, but I am never the sort of person that is against such put together, as mentioned I am a feminist, I am always firmly rooting for the fact that women has the right to make a choice, including in the aspect of fashion. Therefore, as all those while I thought that this girl; a person who was not affected by the voices of the world's stereotype; dresses as she pleases, would be someone who understood the truth that 'women have the right to access freedom of choice and opinion in their life'. I was wrong again, her speech started with an unexpected opening: "I am different from the previous speaker, I dislike being feminine, I believe you could tell based on my outfit.". My eyes were wide opened, at that moment, I thought that she had mistaken the meaning of the word feminist as the previous category. Therefore, I kindly responded: "Excuse me, perhaps I did not manage to make myself clear enough just now, what I meant was 'feminist' not 'feminine'," with the letter 'st' and 'ne' I placed my stress, continued: "meaning I support women's right". Her reply towards this was as if lightning struck my head, she said: "That's too girly still, I just can't agree". I could not control my brain from yelling "What do you mean it is too girly? What do you mean you can not agree? Aren't you supporting that women have the right of freedom as you are dressing according to your wish? Why do you even think that feminist is someone girly or must be girly?" I clench my fist invisibly, keeping all those anger being heard by just me.

I was not angry towards the people; neither was I angry towards myself being placed in disagreement and provoked, I was angry towards such a mind-set, such an attitude, such blindness... The uneducated caused me much anger, the unconcerned caused me more! It is fine if one temporarily does not know, but it is absolutely unacceptable to me when one already knows but chooses to ignore or remain as the old ways.

Please allow me to speak courageously and be brutally honest, the unconcerned and unaware derive from a selfish heart, an uncaring mind. Just because one has found a piece of "comfortable enough" or "got used to it" in his or her part of the world, hence closes his or her own eyes towards the corners of the earth that are still screaming and hoping for a change!

Such anger of mine occurred as simply complicated, an anger without hatreds, however with much disappointments, worries and sorrows. Disappointments stirred up from the wonders of mine, wondering how much more is needed, or would it ever reach sufficient for the world to be transformed. Worries and sorrows cater towards the future that we are making with our own hands for the generations that are yet to take their place.

I remember a video I watched on British Vogue channel about a year ago, where Emma Watson was sharing, could not remember how the sentences exactly were, but it was roughly about the existence of different perspectives towards feminism, and there are different types of feminists if it was mentioned in such a way.

Although many perspectives enter under the umbrella of feminism, one of my standpoint that existed rather strongly would be I believe women deserve freedom and power, they are valuable and worthy of respect. One can be and should be passionate about their own gender, this should not be bound as reckless but rather reasonable and normal.

In all situations that a woman is at, regardless whether is her dream; a life that she decided to pursue; fashion and style; character; appearance; and so on, all these should not be the reason for the world to judge or evaluate; nor being components applied with personal rubrics to measure her identity of being a female. To all the dear sisters that are reading this, no matter you are a full time mother or a company's CEO; a firefighter or a florist; feeling most fabulous in heels and dresses or sweatpants and sneaker; participating in dance or a football team; nature of character being gentle or outspoken, in whatever distinct a woman has chosen or gifted to be, should not cause her "female-ness" to change, none of those should cause a woman to be viewed as more "lady-like" or less "lady-like"! "This is how you should/should not be, because you are a girl", such a statement or perception should not exist! Gender, or according to context –being female, is not supposed to be a restriction, but an identity to be proud of.

Women being viewed higher than men was never the intention or focus of my message, what I am rooting on is that every individual is purposeful and meaningful, therefore all should be treated and respected equally. Hence, women have rights.

As if the movie Little Women, the story about the four sisters with different dreams, talents and character -Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy.

Meg as the eldest sister in the story. She is kind and responsible, interested in acting. However, she made the choice to value love, having her own family, and pursued a life of being a full-time house wife. It was mentioned by her that, ‘Just because my dreams are different than yours, doesn’t mean that mine aren't important.’

Second eldest, Jo, was perceived as a "tomboy", an amazing author, quick to speak and rise in temper. A great saying of hers, 'I intend to make my own way in the world', the words reflected some sort of disappointment and disagreement towards the idea of marriage in that specific era, Jo's utterance presented a believe, a voice, a mind-set that the world should have but seldom occur in that era –the value of women exists within themselves, not by whether they are married, nor depended on whom they marry.

Second youngest, Beth, loves playing the piano and plays well. She is rather shy, and does not cope well with socializing. It was shown that Beth is somewhat different from her sisters Jo and Amy, her dreams were rather not so enormous. Hence, even being greatly gifted in musicality, she decided to keep her music private.

Amy, being the youngest sister, loves to paint, dreamed to be an artist. She is a girl that adores visual beauty, greatly passionate about her dream, but also decided to have a clear cut with her ambition of being an artist. She said, 'I want to be great, or nothing. I won’t be a common-place dauber, so I don’t intend to try anymore'. Amy also uttered, 'I think we have some power over who we love', this very film demonstrated the lack or even none regarding rights and authority, basic chance to make a choice in womanhood, including even the context of marriage and love. That specific quote reminded me that no matter what environment I am being placed in, how the "norms" of the society mistreated me for my identity of being a female, I must never forget and never should I allow the world to rob my value and dignity, even if my perception may appear to be different, not acceptable or welcomed by the others, does not mean that the thoughts of mine need to be ignored, nor should my voice go unheard.

This remarkable film added quite an affirmation to my belief, all women are different, but they are all special and valuable, no one is more a 'female' than the other, or more worthy of ‘power’ than the other, or greater and more important than the other. All four sisters in Little Women are different from one another, but share the same identity –female. As simple as being who they are, qualifies them to have equal rights to express, persist, request, and strive for a change. Every woman is uniquely beautiful, deserves to have dreams, to be given an equal chance to try, equal power to make a choice; choice to take in or pursue; and even choice to reject or defer.

Moreover, The Queen's Gambit nonetheless contributed some insights towards my personal knowledge regarding being a feminist. As shown in the movie, although chess was being perceived as a masculine game, but the main character, Harmon never gave in to the idea that she could not be successful in such a game that she favors just because she is 'just a girl'. A famous quote mentioned by Harmon in one of the series, 'Chess isn't always competitive. Chess can also be beautiful'. Within those words, I drew out such comprehension, 'isn't always competitive', because there is never or should never be a situation needed for a woman to prove that "she can too" because of her gender, 'can' or 'cannot' has nothing to do with one's gender. Thus, in all things, an equal chance for "beautiful" to take place has to occur.

Women have rights, should have and supposed to have! If you have not perceived it that way, maybe your perception needs to be educated! Just like a quote from the film, Enola Holmes, ' Maybe, it is the world that needs a change'.

Such a perception was also much influenced by my faith and belief. Of course, I understand not everyone is a Christian, so if you have the thought of skipping this paragraph, you may feel free to do so. However, I still do hope that we can all read with an open heart.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

–John 15:5-8

In all of the precious and amazing titles the Lord uses to address His people, containing God's 'Children'; 'Heirs'; 'Citizens'; 'Conquerors'; 'Friends'; 'Servants'; 'Warriors' that need to put on the armor of God; 'Disciples'; 'Chosen Ones'; 'People'; 'Royal Priesthood'; 'Nation'; 'Followers'; 'Worshippers'; 'Lover', and many more, God never exclude female in all of these contexts, neither did He count women any lesser or another level lower than male. There is no such a thing, 'I do not deserve, because I am female'. Female is as equal as male in the eyes of God, fairly created; chosen; loved; and blessed. Recorded in John 3:16 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that all who believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life'. As well as Romans 10:13 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved'. The gospel is not restricted to only male or female, nor having male first and female second, not tied down to a specific age; skin color, appearance or social status, it is equally welcoming and important to 'All' and 'Everyone'. The love of God reaches out to you and me.

'The future is in our hands' from Enola Holmes. Hence, a better future begins with you and I, so stop being selfish! If you are extremely blessed, living in an environment where there is mutual respect and care; being able to participate in social interaction regardless what identity you are carrying; given equal opportunity to pursue education; having the freedom to pursue the career and dreams of your choice; holding hand in hand with the person you truly loved even being able to lose nothing when you stay single, remember, not every part of the world is as fortunate as you are; they might not have basic freedom or rights due to their gender, be careful with the jokes and ridicules you make; it may be a weapon that directly or indirectly harm the lives of others. So do not allow your ignorance and selfishness to stagnate or decelerate the progress of the world's improvement.

Lastly, I would love to tell all the women, my sisters out there, you are the pride of the world. Even though sometimes your world may not make you feel that way, still you must never stop being proud of yourself from the bottom of your heart! As it was mentioned, 'your existence is worthy of favor and adoration!' (Sandy Wu, 2020). No matter who you are, your life is made to be purposeful and meaningful.
