FREEDOM, RIGHTS, & RESPONSIBILITY of THE AGE OF MAJORITY
Such an idea crept into life unintentionally: 21 -an important age, the age of majority! Unable to retrieve the most valid reason if I were to be asked why; however all just seems so sensible.
This write up was stimulated by a conversation of mine with a sweet young girl at the age of 21...
At the dinner table, I came to realize that she had reached 21 at that moment, therefore I casually asked: “You’re 21 I see, have you registered to vote yet?” 5 points could be summarized out of her answers.
'I am never sure about politics' |
'I've never thought of voting' |
| c. 'Is voting even necessary?' |
'It doesn't seem to bring any changes' |
'In addition, a long series of complains' |
After the meal, I came across such a topic with different friends of a similar age.
The existence of young people who are part of the Gen Y & Z category,
a crucial and powerful group in this kairos moment;
sharing the same thoughts listed above, was what stirred up the fire in my veins.
Being someone who has received such commends
as well as being one who is part of this impactful generation,
I strongly felt the rights and responsibility to speak up upon this matter.
My responses:
A+B+C+D+E
What I felt most unjustifiable towards that conversation was:
If she 'never' came to 'know', where do the conclusions and decisions derived from?
How does 'never knew' (A), lead to the decisions of 'not wanting' or concluding that it is 'not necessary'... (B-E).
If you never thought of voting, then you shouldn't be complaining. Because only consumers have the right to comment about the product. Therefore, if you are not voting, then you do not have the right to complain.
Clearly, every huge and small matter in life is related to the policy and governing leaders of the nation; so, if you think things are corrupted -'worth complaining', but not wanting to vote, it's the same as if you support and take joy in seeing things being corrupted.
It is not about whether voting is useful, it is about whether you choose to use this freedom, rights and power of yours or not.
Useful or not, strongly depends on whether you use it or not!
Moving on, I would like to focus upon Point D 'It doesn't seem to bring any changes'. In case you are not aware, changes happen all the time! After 6 decades of seeming to have unobvious changes, a remarkable change sparkled during the GE14 that happened in the year 2018, followed after the occasion was not just 1 change, but 3 changes in 1 year.
Maybe this may seemed as a laughing stock to many; however this strongly represents that the nation's democracy is growing; unshakable, unchangeable, solo dominance, univocal can no longer be existing; no more 'Final Say', even when things were being concluded, conclusion can still be changed, this is in regards of both good or bad results; hence, in this digital age, truth can no longer be hidden; darkness is exposed, and the light too cannot be diminished.
Change is no longer just a dream, but it is now an ongoing reality; no matter which generation is stepping up to take on the baton, 'change' is the element to be sustained; because every 'improvement' starts from 'growing unendingly'.
(Hanah Yeoh, 2021)
So right now, improvement and change start from the very vote of yours!

Do you know, if you complain without taking any actions is equivalent to you taking things for granted?
Democracy isn't inborn, it was created, fought, secured, sustained by the power of unity; not unity of just one generation, but generations since independence; in order for you today, being privileged to enjoy and activate democracy as 'human right', 'citizens right', 'freedom'... ...
It is seriously not a big deal if one is not intelligent regarding your very own history, who has not experienced dozing off during Sejarah class? However, it is a big deal if you take things for granted! The privilege of yours being able to enjoy democracy today, procure from the blood, sweat and tears of your ancestors' as well as the many past generations. By simply saying 'I'm not voting', vigorously reflects you dumping away the privilege that others had fought hard for, in order for you today to be able to activate the privilege effortlessly!
'Negaraku, Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku!'
Moreover, sustaining democracy is never just an effort from the past generations, it is also a crucial responsibility of you and I!
According to the Department of Statistic Malaysia, at least 1 life is born in our country every minute, 54 babies are born in an hour, 1288 in a day, and about 47,000 babies are born in a year.
And you are very fortunate to be one of the many thousands in a certain year, existing with a place of birth, having the right to abode, and being certified with an unquestionable nationality since you were born -'Malaysian'! Then the blessings continued, when you turned 12, your identity was further assured, by you being registered with an identity card, loudly proving that you are a citizen of Malaysia, declaring that you have this beautiful identity -'Malaysian'! This is your land, and this place represents you, she is a part of you!
'Negaraku, Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku!' Loving your nation is your undeniable responsibility as a citizen!
If you were to ask why vote, why don't you ask why not?
Voting is free! it is your freedom of reaching the age of majority!
YOLO, a pretty outdated acronym, but rather applicable; You Only Live Once, so please live life to the fullest!
Many of us dedicate as much as we can to ensure we reach 'fullest' in many other areas of our lives the moment we reach adulthood; however, we end up having 'voting' -one that is crucial and meaningful to not be included in the adulting checklist.
You looked forward to reaching the age of majority, and trusting that as long as you crossed the age, you are then set free. Therefore, you should not reject as well towards such a freedom of the legal age! So, vote wholeheartedly, live this meaningful and important part of your life of being legally aged to the FULLEST!
Vote as if YOLO!
Whenever political contents are being placed on the dinner table, sensitive topics are often unavoidable...
During the dinner, topics such as corruption, racism, doubt and mistrust towards leaders and many more related topics were being opened up.
If you are very much concerned of one who is not your skin colour to be placed in position, will cause you to be less favoured or benefited; perhaps you are the one who is prejudiced and self-centred.
We are 'Malaysia' only when all the different races, languages and cultures come together! The differences among us should be our pride, not limitations or barriers!
A good leader is not defined by his/her race, age or gender; it is rooted upon his/her integrity, mentality and ability. One who has integrity will be bold to scream 'NO' towards corruption, injustice and unrighteousness; one who has positive mentality will love his/her nation, thus serve the nation with hot burning passion; and one who is capable stands for one whose wisdom and actions are consistent with the first two criteria, hence wisdom and actions being up to par!
Let's embrace our differences emotionally, at the same time select our leaders wisely!
Many rejections occurred upon the fear of failure. Hear this out: winning is important, but not the only focus!
A good politician will continue to serve his/her people, love his/her country wholeheartedly; regardless whether the party wins or not! On top of that, your vote and support is what motivates the leader or the party to keep on fighting for the Rakyat's best!
Hence, your vote is directly lifting up one or another, impacting the policy of the nation, and channelling a change of improvements towards the future!
In the year 2021, Undi18 was successfully established! Individuals instead of being 21 and above, can now vote as long as you are 18 and above!
For you who are legally aged, you are extremely important! Go forth and enjoy this freedom of yours, practice this right of yours, and unleash this responsibility of yours! Your vote is powerful, so start now, activate it and cast it wisely!
The saying may sound cliché, but ever accurate -'every vote counts!', don't ever think that your 1 vote does not bring any change, what if your vote is all that's lacking at the moment for a change? Know that you are not heard if you do not vote; 'Suara anda tidak boleh didengari, jika anda tidak turun mengundi' (MUDA, 2021) !
Maybe, there will be countless setbacks and disappointments in the journey or experiences of being a voter; however, giving up or not getting it started is definitely not the option! If you are one who is eligible in age but has not stepped into the journey yet, now is the time to kick start; and if you are one who is already on the journey however having hopelessness and disappointments, be encouraged to not give up! You are not alone, and you should not let another be alone; there is power in unity! Let's combine ourselves together in shaping a better future for you and I, uniting our strength in fighting for a better Malaysia!
